How to calculate the final exam score you need

First, multiply each midterm or assignment score by its course weight. Add those contributions, subtract them from the minimum percentage for your target letter, then divide by the final exam’s weight.

Required final = (target course score − points already earned) ÷ (final weight ÷ 100)

Example: what do I need for a BA?

With midterms of 80 and 75 worth 20% each, and a project score of 90 worth 20%, you have earned 49 course points. If BA starts at 85 and your final is worth 40%, you need (85 − 49) ÷ 0.40 = 90 out of 100 on the final.

Which grading scale should I choose?

The US letter grades option starts with A at 93 and A− at 90. These cutoffs vary by course and can be edited. UBC and McGill have separate profiles because their letter grades and cutoffs differ. AA / BA / BB and A1 / A2 / A3 also have editable starting cutoffs. Always check your course syllabus, including any faculty exceptions. These cutoffs convert course scores to letters; they are not GPA point values.

Can I change the letter-grade boundaries?

Yes. Open “View or edit letter-grade cutoffs” and enter the minimum score for each letter. Cutoffs are inclusive: a course score of exactly 85 meets a BA cutoff of 85. Selecting another system restores its starting cutoffs and turns off the estimated curve.

How does the optional curve work?

You provide the minimum course percentage for the reference letter: CC, C, or C2, depending on your scale. Each letter above or below it moves the cutoff by five percentage points. For example, a CC reference of 60 makes BA start at 75. Cutoffs above 100 are unreachable; cutoffs below zero are already met at zero.

What if I need more than 100?

The target is out of reach under the entered scores and weights. The result also shows your highest possible course score with a final score of 100. A required score of zero means the target is mathematically secured; attendance, minimum final scores, and other course rules may still apply.

Results assume scores from 0 to 100, weights totaling 100%, and no extra credit or rounding by your instructor. Required final scores are rounded up to two decimals so the displayed score meets the target. A curve result is an estimate, not a prediction of your instructor’s decision.
